Hypnotherapy works with the unconscious mind to release inner triggers of chronic anxiety and its counterpart, chronic illness. While medical doctors are always the first line of defense, their approach focuses on the body as the source of the problem. In contrast, hypnotherapists recognize the chronic dis-function as simply the guide pointing to the real problem and usually find its origin in the sufferers’ dysfunctional beliefs about themselves.
Emily suffered from long-term intestinal problems characterized by episodes that lasted for weeks of gas, diarrhea and pain. Doctors could help gradually reduce symptoms but couldn’t help the anxiety of an unpredictably troubled digestive system. As is the case of many chronic illness sufferers, she began to wonder if the mind had anything to do with it.
In hypnosis, she learned from her unconscious mind , that an inner conflict was preventing her from being her own confident caretaker. Throughout her life, and in her adult and married life, she prioritized the needs of others over her own. She described herself this way, as did her close family and friends. Her caring personality was so valued and had become so dominant a part of her interactions that, like all patterns, it became stronger every time she expressed it.
But behind this caring personality was a darker part of her, like a shadow, asking the question – ‘will they ever do the same for me?”, and when they didn’t, she experienced a feeling of loneliness and isolation.
Here was the crux of the conflict: If she dismantled this old dysfunctional pattern, would she still be valued and loved?
Hypnotherapy can help a person understand the hidden unhelpful beliefs that prevent us from being successful and happy human beings. In hypnosis, Emily was able to retrain her mind to learn positive healthy ways of eliciting the care and attention of others.
Our need for love and attention is essential for our emotional and physical wellbeing. When this need has been met, we are more at peace with ourselves and our body reflects that inner emotional harmony.
Emily hasn’t had an intestinal episode in a long time.
She’s putting herself first and she feels that others care for her too.
