As a clinical hypnotherapist, I’ve seen it all. When first-time hypnotherapy clients walk in, they’re often carrying a suitcase full of misconceptions about hypnotherapy, thanks to decades of Hollywood drama. Today, I want to pull back the velvet curtain and separate fact from fiction.
Let’s tackle some of the most common hypnosis misunderstandings.
Myth 1: You Lose Control and Can Be Made to Do Anything.
This is the king of all myths about hypnosis. The image of a swinging pocket watch turning someone into a mindless puppet is pure fiction. In reality, hypnosis is a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. Your subconscious mind has a powerful ethical compass and will not accept suggestions that go against your core values. You cannot be “made” to do anything you don’t want to do. In fact, if your hypnosis session is a waste of time or you’re not comfortable with the process, you can snap out of the trance just as easily as you can snap out of a daydream. You always have this control.
Myth 2: Hypnosis is a Form of Unconsciousness.
Another one of the popular hypnosis myths explained is the idea that you are unconscious when in a trance. It’s quite the opposite! You are in a wakeful, deeply relaxed state, similar to daydreaming or being completely absorbed in a great conversation. You’ll be curious. Your mind will be open to experiencing a perspective you didn’t think was possible. You’ll be surprised at your ability to experience emotional states that seemed unachievable in real life situations. Being conscious of what is happening in a trance is why hypnotherapy is so powerful. It feels so easy that you can replicate it when you leave my office and go back to your everyday life. That’s the whole point of hypnotherapy.
Myth 3: Is Hypnosis Fake or Real?
This is a fundamental question. Hypnosis is very real and is backed by substantial scientific research. It’s a natural state of mind that we all drift in and out of daily. Clinical hypnotherapy simply harnesses the problem-solving state that is being drowned out by your conscious, judgmental, critical voice. This is why I refer to all hypnosis as self-hypnosis. Your mind can now choose the solution you want to achieve.
So, what is the truth behind hypnosis sessions? They are collaborative, safe, and empowering. They are a tool for unlocking your own innate potential to overcome challenges like anxiety, trauma, quitting smoking, or managing chronic pain.
